Today, electric utilities typically outsource their demand response participation through demand response service providers such as NAPP. Demand response service providers install software and hardware that communicate with the customer's online energy management systems. In some cases, they also control the customer's electric power requirements as needed.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued Order 719 to reduce market barriers for Demand Response in wholesale markets. There is a greater interest in utility program design that will support participation of Demand Response resources in wholesale markets.
NAPP helps utilities and grid operators meet the challenge of managing high demands for energy. NAPP's Demand Response programs are custom designed to help utilities meet peak demand and emergency conditions — thereby decreasing the need for high-priced peak power. NAPP helps utilities develop alternative strategies for assuring system reliability.
Functioning as an additional supply option, Demand Response creates hybrid programs that provide economic resources, wholesale grid resources, and utility distribution grid resources.
